FCC TAKES FURTHER STEPS TO ASSIST IN KATRINA DISASTER RELIEF
One of the steps the FCC is taking to address disasters in general is the creation of a new Public Safety/Homeland Security Bureau. This new bureau will have responsibility for coordinating public safety, national security, and disaster management activities within the FCC. When the restructuring is complete (assuming the plan is approved by Congress), the Public Safety/ Homeland Security Bureau will develop policies and rules to "promote effective and reliable communications for public safety, national security, and disaster management."

In the wake of the Katrina disaster only two AM and two FM stations stayed on the air out of the 41 radio stations assigned to the New Orleans area.
